As the weather starts warming up, shorts season will grace us with it’s presence. Shorts can be a tricky one for some guys. The key with shorts is nailing the right footwear. The right footwear can take your outfit from looking like a kid in middle school gym class to an elevated gentleman.
Short Anwer:
Loafers – great for dressing up an outfit
Huraches – perfect for the guy who wants something different, but also likes to look earthy or boho
Slide Sandal – perfect for keeping this elevated, but also relaxed (can range from Birkenstocks to a sleek suede slide)
Sleek sneakers – You can’t go wrong with a sleek leather or suede sneaker in a color of your choice
Retro Sneakers – If you want to look cool and casual, a sneaker with a little something going on can help you step things up
Here’s a visual:

How do you pick the right shoes and shorts combo for you?
- What is the occasion?
- Do you need to dress up a bit? Consider a loafer
- Can you keep it casual? Consider a sneaker
- Do you want to look relaxed and be able to take your shoes off easily? Consider a sandal like a slide or huraches
- What is your personal style?
- A retro sneaker is perfect for very casual look, while a white sleek sneaker can help step it up a bit
- A hurache is perfect for the guy who likes to be a bit more boho
- A slide is great for someone who like the quiet luxury relaxed look
- Loafers are great for the guy who wants to look a bit more put together
- What are you pairing the shorts with?
- A button down shirt with rolled up sleeves is the perfect smart casual look (all shoes work)
- A t-shirt or henley keeps it more casual (sneakers or huraches work)
- A polo adds a quiet luxury asethetic (slides or loafers work)
Socks or no socks with shoes and shorts?
Totally optional! I personally like a half calf or crew sock with sneakers. If you want to make an extra statement, you can pair some socks with your slides or Birkenstocks (I’ll include visuals below).
Now for my favorite part, visuals! See which looks appeal to you.
